Several hundred thousand guests from all directions – concept against chaos

Requirements

No matter who would be in the final, one thing was clear: There would be lots of people coming to the Bavarian capital. In addition to the 63,000 guests in the arena, up to 200,000 other fans were expected in Munich: The UEFA Champions Festival in the Olympic Park and organized public viewing events took place during the week of the final. The Olympiapark also hosted the Champions League women’s final – with 50,000 guests expected.
However, the sheer number of people is not all: The travel routes of spectators to the Champions League final follow their own principles, and the modal split – the distribution of travelers among the various means of transport – is completely different from that of a Bundesliga match. Sophisticated concepts were required in this case.

And: At the beginning of the planning, there were still 16 teams from all over Europe in the competition. Who would be in the final? Airplane, intercity bus, car or train – depending on the home country of the finalists, the guests’ journey would look different. Therefore, different concepts had to be developed for different scenarios.

In the worst case, the airports in Munich and the surrounding area would have to cope with 40,000 additional passengers in up to 300 charter planes. From there, these would still have to get to the arena. Alone for visitors to the arena, parking for up to 750 buses was needed. Due to the many side events, public transport also had to prepare for the rush of visitors.

Implementation

In cooperation with traffic authorities, police, fire department, public transport representatives and the event office of the city of Munich, Companeer developed the traffic concept as General Mobility Coordinator. The concept was presented at regular meetings with UEFA and the Local Organizing Committee and constantly adapted to changing conditions.

It served as a planning basis for the parties involved – such as the airport, the public transport operators and the transport authorities. The police used it as the basis for their operational concept. When the finalists were determined, Companeer presented the mobility concept to club officials. Final improvements were implemented.
